How a deaf entrepreneur showed me why adding accurate subtitles to videos benefits the deaf
During the Billionaire Week for Women, I met Melissa "echo" Greenlee, founder of #deaffriendly, that helps advise deaf-friendly businesses, and corrective feedback to deaf-challenged businesses.
Echo approached me at the end of the conference to thank me for adding subtitles to my LinkedIn videos because it gave people like her (Echo is deaf) in the deaf community equal access to the content I'm creating in the same way that everyone else does.
As much as I would love to have said that was the reason why I did it, I let her know that I did it so people could watch the videos in silent mode while traveling or in meetings.
Either way, I was incredibly grateful she not only illuminated the fact that this was a great service to the deaf and hearing-impaired community, but that she also let me and everyone at the EBW2020 (Empowering a Billion Women by 2020) event know that there was a huge untapped market that businesses & content creators such as myself are not taking advantage of.
Echo also shared what we can do to support the blind community and I share a producer tip she taught me. Thank you Echo for getting all of us to truly listen & make a difference for others.
